For that perfect chilling-meets-culture break, you can’t beat Alila Ubud in Bali.
This heavenly hillside hideaway is set amidst the lush tropical rainforest just 5 km from popular Ubud, Bali’s cultural heartland. Offering a free shuttle service to the centre of Ubud, this boutique retreat high above the Ayung River is where serenity and style meet. Urban escapists head here for laidback luxe for less, jungle joy and tropical tranquility. On top of all this, Alila Ubud’s 25-metre infinity pool with a killer view is the wow-factor here.
Like its sister hotels in Bali, Alila Villas Uluwatu and Alila Manggis, Alila Ubud is a sustainable design hotel with a minimal eco footprint. The architecture of this jungle must-book hotel, by the Australian firm Kerry Hill, is a blend of a modern design and traditional Balinese style. We love the gorgeous photographs of Balinese people throughout the hotel.
Featuring sophisticated rooms & luxurious designer villas, Alila Ubud’s low-rise landscape pays homage to a traditional Balinese village. The superior and deluxe rooms, with panoramic views of the magical Ayung Valley, are spread out among 14 two-storey buildings and include either a private balcony or garden terrace. Surrounded by the jungle buzzing with natural life – including lots of cheeky monkeys –, the 120 sqm Terrace Tree Villas, where we stayed, are the pinnacle of tropical exclusivity. We felt like Tarzan & Jane on a luxury break in the lush jungle. Here, the design seduces the eye. Wood and green shades take care of the jungle aspect, while urban comforts, modern finishes and elegant furnishings convey the other face of Alila Ubud – a stylish boutique hotel in the hills of Ubud. We’re big fans of Alila Hotels & Resorts and we think the bath amenities for him & her, our favorite detail, are surprisingly different.
Feeling hungry? Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the hotel’s open-air Plantation Restaurant, overlooking the dramatic award-winning pool and offering Asian & Western dishes and drinks. Below, the chilled-out Cabana Lounge by the emerald-green pool is ideal for small bites as well as sundowners. For breakfast try the traditional Balinese “Jamu” drink which contains natural ingredients to treat health problems such as headaches.
During the day, discover the natural beauty of Ubud – go mountain biking through the rice fields -, admire local artwork at the on-site art gallery or just kick back by the pool. Secure your lounger early – it can get busy very quickly.
Alila Ubud in Bali is a sanctuary for mind, body and soul. Fancy a pampering body treatment or Balinese massage? Bliss out at Spa Alila after joining the happy yoga morning class. We warn you: yoga is addictive and will make you feel high. Namasté!
