Chongwe River Camp
Zambia is not top of mind when you think of safari and wildlife – yet it really should be. Make your Zambia visit unforgettable and stay at Chongwe River Camp in Lower Zambezi National Park. This is a world far away from the daily life where it’s just you and the beauty of nature in deep Africa.
Lower Zambezi National Park is one of the few true wilderness areas left in Africa, and Chongwe River Camp recalls an era when African safaris were real-life adventures. On the confluence of the mighty Zambezi and the tranquil Chongwe channel, Chongwe River Camp offers classic tents and 2 luxurious tented suites with exquisite river views and en-suite outdoor bathrooms.
The standards and service are excellent with emphasis on guests comfort, relaxation and enjoyment of an authentic African experience. You’ll be impressed by Lower Zambezi’s vast and varied sweeping landscapes, its wildlife, its tremendous, wild natural beauty, and the warmth and down to earth friendliness of the people who call this unique land home. We think the authenticity and homely, personal service that you find in Chongwe River Camp is refreshing. Ideal for fishing, canoeing and safaris, this rustic, remote and relaxing camp in Zambia is just a magnificent piece of heaven.
Built with respect for their natural bushveld and riverside setting, Chongwe River Camp is decorated in an uncomplicated and relaxed safari style with natural textures as well as colorful carpets and cushions.
Choose to stay in the classic tents or in one of the two suites (Albida or Cassia). The suites boast the luxury of individual butler services, outdoor living rooms and private plunge pools set on the banks of the Chongwe River. All the classics tents have private verandas overlooking the Chongwe River. We stayed in the Cassia Suite which is perfect for honeymooners. Two things truly mark out the Cassia Suite. Firstly, the singing hippos in front of the Cassia Suite – the perfect wake-up call in the morning. Secondly, the service from the amazing butler Steve. You really get spoiled by his personal service. The Cassia Suite is like your own African retreat and we highly recommend to book this suite. The Classic Tents are very rustic, comfortable and cozy, but not as luxurious and stylish as the suites. Moreover, the Albida Suite with two tents and outdoor lounge area is the ideal place to stay for groups or families.
Chongwe River Camp embraces a casual, family-style atmosphere with dinner served at a large communal table under the glittering canopy of the African night skies. Staying in a suite? All meals are served in the comfort and privacy of your suite. How chill is that?
Daily activities include boat cruises, canoeing and game drives. Definitely try the canoeing safari. We encountered lots of crocs, hippos and elephants crossing the river. It was such a cool experience! A safari at Chongwe River Camp is very private and personal. After a morning game drive plunge in the pool or choose to do nothing at all. The Lower Zambezi is also widely known as one of the best places to catch (and release) a tiger fish or two.
Good to know: herds of Elephants often wander through Chongwe River Camp as if it’s their own. It is! In Lower Zambezi don’t except an abundance of game here. Sometimes you’re lucky and sometimes not. In fact, the Lower Zambezi NP has much less wildlife than South Luangwa National Park. But don’t forget, it’s not a zoo.
Your memories will last forever!
