The Mediterranean city of Barcelona has something for everyone. Whether you explore its coastline or its neighbourhoods, you’re sure to be dazzled from sunup to sundown.

No idea where to stay in cultured & cosmopolitan Barcelona? Fan of boutique b&b’s? Discover Margot House, a smart 9-room stay, full of character and style on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona’s Eixample district. Small guesthouses and boutique hotels with a personal touch are flourishing everywhere and Margot House is a perfect example of how a little boutique bolthole should be. Surrounded by designer shops like Chanel, Prada and Gucci and opposite the iconic Casa Batlló (one of Antoni Gaudí’s masterpieces), Margot House is without a doubt one of the best boutique guesthouses in Barcelona.

Simplicity, privacy, discreet luxury, personal service and attention to detail (drinks and snack service 24hrs a day, a neighbourhood guide, free laundry service and Brompton bicycles) is the formula of Hotel Margot House, the brainchild of Sergio Durany and his daughter Sandra. Hotel? What hotel? Margot House in the centre of Barcelona is your stylish & serene Spanish home. Ok, perhaps ”home away from home” is a more accurate description. Any downsides? A lack of signage on Passeig de Gràcia (the entrance is right next to Swarovski) and it’s situation on the first floor of a residential building were not the best first impressions for us. Apparently, this is all part of the Margot House experience. If you’re looking for more traditional luxury, say a doormen or a porter, this might not be your vibe. Who stays here? Couples and discerning older travellers. The peace and quiet of Margot House may be deafening for young friends and the house has an adults only on policy – sorry kids.

As pretty as the character that actress Gwyneth Paltrow played in the movie ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ (her name was Margot), Hotel Margot House in Barcelona is impeccably designed & styled. Think light wood furniture, soft neutral tones, raw concrete surfaces and a mix of Japanese and Scandinavian design sensibilities that reflect the owners’ backgrounds in interior design and fashion (Sergio owns a chain of eco-friendly lifestyle stores in Spain called Natura, while Sandra owns fashion & accessories stores BE).

Offering a few travellers a distinct alternative to traditional city hotels, Margot House on Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia has just 9 guestrooms where you can cocoon in understated luxury. Like the rest of this Pinterest-perfect property, the rooms look minimalistic with white walls and linens, beach hut panelling and designer lamps. All the rooms – ranging from ‘Cosy’ to larger ‘Suites’ – feature luxurious hammam showers including Aesop bath products, Samsung smart TV’s, Blu-ray players, Bower & Wilkins speakers, Turkish bath towels and furniture by Otras Cosas. Be warned: some rooms are compact, interior rooms with no views, so make sure you pick a large room with views of Passeig de Gràcia and Gaudí‘s Casa Batlló. If the room of your choice is available, then Margot’s is a great option for somebody who prefers a small property.

There’s an open kitchen to help yourself to tea, coffee, and pastries plus an ‘honesty bar’ for stronger libations. Breakfast – a mix of homemade cakes, fine pastries, fresh juices, different types of bread, scrambled eggs, or other proposed combinations prepared in the open kitchen on a daily basis – is a perfect start of the day. After breakfast, get a Brompton bicycle, use their neighbourhood guide and explore the stunning Spanish city of Barcelona. And, do you need a massage or want to read your favourite newspaper afterwards? No problemo! All you have to do is ask.

So, what are you waiting for?
