Originally a sleepy beach outpost for wanderers and backpackers, Tulum has become the hippest hotspot of Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Situated just south of the mega-resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen’s string of all-in hotels, the bohemian beach paradise of Tulum has an easy-going vibe, jungle scenery, blazingly white beaches, jade-green water and balmy breezes. And, where else can you get all that and a dramatically situated Maya ruin? Sure, there’s tourist traffic in Tulum, but they’re here for some of Mexico’s most visited Mayan ruins, not the all-you-can-drink margarita special at the pool bar.

In Mexico’s Tulum the cluster of low-key beach huts has gone upmarket, with a proliferation of boutique-luxe beach hotels, trendy jungle restaurants and cool bars springing up along the main beach strip (Boca Paila). On the north end of this coastal hotel strip and an easy bike ride from the oceanfront Maya ruins, you can find Collibri Hotels’ latest addition. Collibri was a pioneer in the tiny & idyllic town of Tulum. It helped put the Mexican town on the map with the opening of several stylish hotels such as Mezzanine and La Zebra Hotel the last ten years.

Perched on a rocky cliff over the Caribbean Sea in the heart of Tulum’s Parque Nacional, Mi Amor Hotel means a fusion of seaside serenity, natural beauty and high style by hip Mexico City design firm Muro Rojo. Only drawback? Unlike many other Tulum boutique hotels, there’s no beach here, but it’s a short stroll to one of the best swimming beaches in Tulum. Moreover, Mi Amor offers plenty of places for relaxing plus a perfect-for-posing pool (which snakes along the edge of the open-air restaurant). Paying tribute to the romantic days of Acapulco in the 1950’s, Mi Amor Hotel is designed for style-savvy travellers and those who like to keep it boutique. It’s a small & smart stay that knows when to hit the perfect note.

Mi Amor Hotel in marvellous Mexico delivers design with a big D. Offering a tranquil grown-ups-only escape for modern life, Mi Amor exudes Instagram-ready Mexican modernism. Think of lots of contemporary colourful cement tiles, exclusive elements created by Mexican artists & designers, sleek lines, woven swings and a breathtaking open plan design combined with a stunning backdrop of the Caribbean Sea.

Totally in harmony with the wild tropical environment, the only seventeen bedrooms at this designer-chic clifftop retreat are serene cocoons. Mi Amor’s sumptuously styled rooms overlook either the jungle, pool or sea, giving guests an airy, natural feel with all the modern comforts of a luxury hotel room – including Malin + Goetz bath products, Nespresso coffee machines, pillow menus, beach bags, minibars and large rain showers. Some rooms boast refreshing plunge pools. The sea-facing room with terrace would be our choice of accommodation. Snooze on your private terrace, melt into the sea’s fifty shades of blue and watch the beautiful birds flying overhead, while iguanas sunbathe on the rocks.

Inspired by French & Italian cuisine, the poolside restaurant at Mi Amor Hotel is overseen by Chef Paul Bentley. In such a setting, only carefully crafted cocktails are appropriate.

After a tasty breakfast, try a pampering massage at Mi Amor’s Colibri Spa, walk to the Mayan ruins or bike along the coast for some retail therapy (we love Tulum’s hippie-chic jungle boutiques). Tulum is also the place to be for diving & snorkelling in the area’s many cenotes (water caves). Daredevil? Kite surfers will love Tulum’s balmy breezes. Unfortunately, this modern piece of Mexican Riviera Maya has no gym, but Tulum is home to some of Mexico’s best yoga spots.
