Pure Food and Wine Restaurant
If you’re in the mood for a detox day, absolutely worth trying is the Pure Food and Wine Restaurant. They are not kidding about the ”Pure”. Everything served at this outstanding restaurant, opened in 2004, is vegan, organic, and raw.
Located near the famous and artsy Gramercy Park Hotel, not only fans of raw gourmet food come here, in fact, most of their guests are not strictly vegan and vegetarian. The surprise is that this super-healthy food is also beautifully prepared, delicious, and sophisticated haute cuisine.
Pure Food and Wine was co-founded by Sarma Melngailis and this unusual restaurant boasts an enchanting summer garden and the atmosphere is very friendly and inviting. Around the corner from the restaurant you can find their One Lucky Duck juice bar and takeaway for juices, shakes, ice cream, cookies, desserts, and takeaway food.
The understated, modern interior with a red theme and wood-panelled walls is designed by the owner.
The raw food – organically grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs – is prepared to perfection, and even the tap water is purified through a high-end filtration system. They don’t use dairy or gluten products and there is also no tofu, tempeh or seitan anywhere on the menu. Everyone always imagines a menu of just salads, but it’s much more than that.
Within the kitchens at Pure Food and Wine, Nikki Bennet and her team create tempting and totally original concoctions. Joey Repice – the man behind the bar – makes yummy fresh-pressed juices and shakes such as the Thai Green, Fruit Spice, Tropical Snow or Strawberry Blonde.
The menu includes exquisite dishes like Pear ravioli with lemon mache and truffle honey, Zucchini and tomato lasagna with basil pistachio pesto, Portabella mushroom with cauliflower and horseradish aioli, peach salsa and haricots verts, Dark chocolate semifreddo with coconut cream and passion fruit sorbet and Ginger cheesecake.
Nice to know: the owner, Sarma Melngailis, is the author of a raw food cookbook.
We must say it’s the freshest food we’ve ever eaten, and after having dinner at Pure Food and Wine we felt very energetic instead of having a major after dinner dip.
