Longing for something superb? Go on, spoil yourselves with a stay at Rosewood Mayakoba Resort, located along a mile of sandy beach on Mexico’s Rivera Maya just south of Cancun and north of the popularized tourist haunt of Playa del Carmen. Here, enter another world where ultra-luxury, time and peace come as a standard.

At the heart of the ecological enclave Mayakoba, this tropical luxury retreat on Mexico’s Riviera Maya covers many small islands surrounded by a mangrove jungle. Developed and owned by OHL, Spain’s largest construction company, Mayakoba itself is a 1600-acre master-planned resort community, with three hotels (there is also a Banyan Tree and a Fairmont) and shared common facilities, most notably a signature Greg Norman championship golf course.

In Mexico Rosewood Mayakoba Resort tops our world’s best hotels list for its five-star faultless facilities, superstar staff and luxe comforts away from the crowds. Slight shame that the waters aren’t as clear as those of Tulum or Isla Holbox, and the beach sands aren’t quite as champagne-powder-perfect as they are further south, but we don’t care. The reason? We love Rosewood Mayakoba’s divine sense of perfectionism. Since the resort’s debut in 2008, the ultimate of pampering has been at its core. From the music menu and warm shoulder pillow in the spa, the Evian spray and cold towel in the sauna, the tequila present, candles, rose petals, cookies & chocolates in your room to the Alebrijes (handmade imaginary animals from Oaxaca in Mexico) on your bed and the ice lollies, glasses of champagne and local candies by the pool (this list could go on), no detail here is overlooked. And, best of all, our sunglasses where cleaned by the pool, while getting a head massage with refreshing cucumbers on our eyes. The one who decided to introduce these brilliant services deserves a standing ovation. In all these years, we haven’t experienced this high-level of indulgence before. They totally go out of their way to make you feel special and ultra-comfortable. No wonder this exclusive enchanting escape along Mexico’s Caribbean coast has been consistently ranked among the top resorts in the world.

Who stays here? Rosewood Mayakoba Resort in Playa del Carmen is the destination of choice for high-profile privacy seekers, honeymooners with film-star salaries, stressed-out CEOs who want to chill out and recharge their batteries and lovers of really slick service and luxury in stunning surroundings. Furthermore, the sublime & spacious Sense Spa including fantastic fitness facilities will lure wellness junkies looking for the best of the best. In a nutshell: Mexico’s Rosewood Mayakoba Resort delivers on every level.

Hugged by its wild Mexican jungle, tranquil lagoons and the sparkling sea, this flora & fauna paradise on Mexico’s Riviera Maya is constructed from local materials, like Yucatan limestone and regional wood. Rosewood Mayakoba Resort was built around the indigenous plants and wildlife so that, as you stroll, float, golf-cart or bike (everybody gets a beach cruiser) around this luxurious piece of heaven in Playa del Carmen, it can almost feel like you’re on safari.

When you arrive, the special experience starts with a deluxe boat tour to your suite, escorted by a butler while sipping a welcome drink. You’ll be embraced by its natural wonderland and may spot birds, or an occasional iguana or crocodile (like we did). Truly the perfect start of a perfect holiday.

Dotted along the edges of a freshwater lagoon and a pristine slice of Caribbean shore, the above-average large 128 suites are as exclusive as they are tropical. Sleek from the outside and a mix of contemporary & classic chic from the inside, Rosewood Mayakoba’s cocoons of luxury just scream ‘have the time of your life’. Sizes and features vary, but all beachfront – and lagoon suites are appreciably better than standard luxury hotel rooms. We stayed at two truly outstanding rooms: suite 207, nestled amid lush foliage, with a romantic feel and the giant suite 206, built on the lagoon. Our personal butler Elaine was our best hotel butler ever. Revive your soul in the private plunge pool while listening to the soundtrack of birdcalls or retreat to your secluded rooftop sun deck to gaze at the stars.

You may struggle to leave your suite at first, because the beds are extremely comfy, the marble bathrooms are divine and the private terraces & pools ultra-chill. But try, because Rosewood Mayakoba hotel also has sublime restaurants to gorge in. Without a doubt, Rosewood Mayakoba offers the best breakfast you can imagine. Choose from the buffet, the menu or both and don’t forget to try a Coco Amor from the superfood smoothies menu. Dining options include the elegant Mediterranean restaurant Casa del Lago overlooking the second pool and an Asian eatery. When it’s taco time, go to the beachfront Punta Bonita restaurant. Fancy something really special? Join other guests in La Ceiba’s organic garden for authentic Mexican flavours, music and drinks. Highly recommended!

Given the Mayan’s rich wellness traditions, spas are a key part of the modern Riviera Maya experience. Should you desire totally tropical solitude, visit the 17,000 sq. ft. serene Sense Spa. Located on a private island and offering the same standout service found throughout the rest of the resort, Rosewood Mayakoba’s wellness temple is home to saunas, steam rooms, indoor pools, cold plunge pools, Jacuzzis, silence rooms and sensory showers for both men and women. Unique feature: the Mayan herbs & plants room full of healing ingredients for Mexican signature treatments. We’ve been to many luxury spa hotels around the globe, but Sense Spa is absolutely next-level. Fitness fanatics will love Rosewood Mayakoba’s huge state-of-the-art gym and daily fitness activities including TRX, cardio & core training, yoga, barre Pilates and much more. Morning sun salutations at the pretty overwater pavilion will make you feel relaxed, restored and reinvigorated.

Relaxation is the name of the game here, but there’s a huge amount to keep everyone beaming at Mexico’s Riviera Maya patch of perfection. Mayakoba has tennis courts, the resort has a beachclub plus all the watersports, 3 outdoor shimmering pools and eco-tours are organised by Alonso, the resident biologist. What about the kids? They will be entertained at the complimentary & supervised kids’ club, called Rose Buds.
