Fancy a mini-break in Morocco? Go to coastal, casual & compact Essaouira with its unhurried bohemian charm, historic souks, endless windswept beaches and white houses plus blue shutters. With its briny air and scents of spices, Morocco’s city by the sea was made for fairy-tale romance.

If you’re looking for a low key yet good-looking riad stay offering a true authentic experience, then Villa Maroc in cosmopolitan Essaouira is a great choice. Ideally located just off Essaouira’s biscuit-colored beach, at the entrance of the UNESCO-protected rabbit-warren medina, and just steps away from the harbor, Villa Maroc claims the distinction of being Morocco‘s first riad hotel. Originally catering for surfers, this boutique gem made up of four medina mansions has grown up since it first opened some twenty-five years ago. Providing warm Moroccan hospitality, Villa Maroc hotel is peaceful, intimate, stylish and full of charm & tradition.

The four restored 18th-century townhouses, all white and deep blue adorned, feature a labyrinthine warren of interior courtyards, plenty of romantic nooks & crannies and pretty winding staircases. Furthermore, there is a petite spa including a traditional Moroccan hammam as well as a breezy colorfully furnished rooftop terrace featuring stunning views over Essaouira’s vast sandy beach and the ocean. Romantically rustic Villa Maroc is owned by the friendly & chic Cornelia Hendry from Switzerland and her Moroccan husband. They also own Les Jardins de Villa Maroc, a finca-style boutique villa in Essaouira’s countryside, where you can spend the day lounging by the sparkling pool and soaking up the Moroccan sun.

Tucked around several courtyards, Villa Maroc’s 21 hotel rooms & suites are decorated with terracotta tiles and driftwood beams. Providing a perfect combination of simple comfort and authenticity, the rooms are all different in shape, size and décor. The style? Think souk shabby chic and very boutique. Expect crisp white walls, handmade Moroccan décor pieces and splashes of dark red fabrics. Suite 30, looks outwards over Essaouira‘s harbor (unusual for a riad).

In the mornings, go to the pretty rooftop terrace for a Moroccan style breakfast (fruit salad, freshly-squeezed orange juice, kefir (like yoghurt), eggs, Moroccan flatbreads and homemade jam) served between tropical plants. After a day of haggling in Essaouira’s souks, sunbathing on the beach, relaxing in the small spa or surfing the Atlantic waves, enjoy Moroccan regional specialties in one of the cozy corners or fireside hideaways. Tip: book Villa Maroc’s great cookery course in advance.
